Bayshore Foundation and Alzheimer Society Peel
Launched in 2017, the Bayshore Foundation for Empowered Living supports local charities that help people live independently by funding initiatives that improve Canadians’ quality of life by removing barriers that prevent them from taking control of their independence.
Since 2018 the Foundation has donated over $110,000 to Alzheimer Society Peel. So far in 2024, fundraising and donations raised through events hosted by our Bayshore Home Health branch in Mississauga and our National Service Centre, have exceeded $50,000.
These funds have helped support subsidized programs offered by Alzheimer Society Peel for persons living with dementia (or with symptoms consistent with dementia), their care partners and family members, as well as community partners and the general public.
These programs include:
- Adult Day Programs available Monday to Friday 7:30 am – 5:30 pm include recreational activities, exercise classes and music therapy.
- Respite Care in the 6-bed facility, Nora’s House. Available to most persons living with dementia (the exception being those with complex care needs), Nora’s House offers meals, recreational activities and a therapeutic garden.
- In-person and Virtual Support Groups for the person living with dementia and their care partners. These in-person and virtual support groups are peer-led and are facilitated by Alzheimer Society Peel counsellors. Topics include Ambiguous Loss and Grief, Learning the Ropes and First Steps/Circle of Friends. A Care Partner Café is also available.
- The Virtual Hub is a private website for individuals associated with Alzheimer Society Peel offering a variety of video programming and activity plans created by Client Service Facilitators and a Music Therapist. The Virtual Hub also provides an electronic newsletter, links to other websites offering resources and activities and a Weekly Sing Along.
- Available in-person or as a pre-recorded video, free Educational programs are available to the public and include topics such as Getting Started, Montessori for Dementia, Caregiver Burnout, Legal and Financial, Long Term Care Planning, and Understanding Behaviours. Alzheimer Society Peel also has a Dementia Training Lab that offers In-depth and informative education sessions for professionals supporting those living with dementia.
- Free Counselling Services offering support, guidance and education. Counselling can be accessed via in-home visits, office visits or via phone and or email. Counsellors are also able to provide referrals to other organizations.
- The care navigation tool, First Link is the first point of contact for persons reaching out to Alzheimer Society Peel. Counsellors assess the situation and needs and directs the person living with dementia (or their family member or care partner) to the most appropriate internal or external resources.
The Bayshore Foundation is proud to continue to support Alzheimer Society Peel and its many local programs and services. Last year alone, the Bayshore Foundation subsidized over 1,100 Day Programs, 290 days of stays at Nora’s House, 527 counselling hours and 527 education seats. In total, Bayshore and it’s employees have raised and donated more than $230,000 for Alzheimer Society chapters across Canada.
